Overview¶
Main article: Charlie Rivera and the Band (CRATB) - Complete Profile
The acronym emerged as shorthand in the music press and fan communities, eventually becoming the band's primary public identifier. Like many successful band acronyms, CRATB took on a life independent of its expanded form--younger fans sometimes didn't know what the letters stood for, knowing only the acronym as a proper noun.
The band's core lineup consisted of Charlie Rivera (saxophone), Ezra Cruz (trumpet), Jacob Keller (piano), Peter Liu (bass), and Riley Mercer (drums/guitar), with Minjae Lee joining as keyboardist. Their genre-defying sound blended jazz, Latin jazz, reggae fusion, soul, and classical-jazz hybrid elements across a career spanning nearly five decades.
Linguistic Notes¶
The acronym is written in all caps without periods: CRATB, not C.R.A.T.B. In casual fan usage, it sometimes appeared lowercase ("cratb") in social media contexts. The fandom name CRATBrats derived directly from the acronym.
